Eyeless in Gaza, images from the net.

        Eyeless in Gaza...

Footnotes:

I wanted to leave these images up clear of any text.

My friend Richard suggested we should acknowledge the sources so I've made a big effort to track them down out of respect for the incredible job they do, and especially for their courage, working in the dangerous zones where so many aid workers and journalists have lost their lives.

But some are not credited on the pages of publications I drew them from.

Here's a list I've just completed, numbered from the image No.1 at top of page down to the final one, No.9

  5. Thanks David, me too! That's why I tried to let them stand alone! How can words add to what the images tell us?

  6. I recall some years ago, now, one of the most erudite radio announcers in the history of Australian broadcasting being abused, vilified and threatened with violence for daring to discuss this issue (which dates back to 1948) on his weekday lunchtime program. I'd like to share with you his final word on this matter:

“I have said publicly that I will never write or speak on the subject of Israel or Palestine ever again. Here is why.

The Zionist lobby in this country is malicious, implacable, mendacious and dangerous. They have caused me a great deal of lost sleep – and in the end my insomnia has not contributed anything to the resolution of the conflict over Palestine. I might as well keep my mouth shut and get some sleep.

What’s more, once the expression ‘anti-Semite’ hits the air, or heaven forefend, the sacred formula ‘six million’ is uttered, then I know from bitter experience that there is not one manager or editor in the country who will defend an underling. We are thrown to the jackals.

In the end the truly tolerant have no defence against intolerance. I surrender. To the Zionists I say: You win. To the Palestinians: Forgive my cowardice.”

  7. Thank you for sending us this whoever you may be! In my mind Terry Lane was a paragon of clear thinking! I always considered him unbiased, no matter what topic was being discussed. However our world has become much more contentious and disinformation abounds. Also, people by and large are unaware of history. Enough from me!

  8. I have kept up with much of this through some journalists who are amazingly, still alive, and still sending us pleas for help, but now I fear I becoming one of those who, “cannot watch any more”. I hang my head in shame? Hopelessness? I just hang my head.

  9. I'm sure you are not alone. I'm in the same category. It's a terrible crime against humanity and most of us simply can't bear to see more of it on the news every day, wherever it occurs: Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan etc. For me it has never been harder to keep up with the news of the world! pt

  10. The images remind me of Hiroshima, and I think indeed there's been more power in all the bombs dropped on Gaza than there was in that one mighty bomb dropped on Hiroshima 80 years ago. The phrase "a thousand cuts" comes to mind.

  11. A great observation Bill, I definitely had not thought of it in that way.
